Sustaining Sustainable Living

With all the different aspects about living a greener life, it's easy to become overwhelmed. Almost every choice we could possibly make has some sort of affect on our planet, and it can be paralyzing not knowing how to make a difference. From the food we eat, to the clothes we wear, what we buy at the store, or even the car we drive to get there, it all has some sort of impact. But there's no way we're going to be able to change everything, especially not overnight.

What I would recommend is starting small, changing just one thing you do or buy at a time. But even more important is changing the filter through which you view the world. Why is preserving the Earth important to you?

A good friend of mine tapped me on the shoulder yesterday and pointed out that it would be nice to hear more about how my faith affects the choices I make. I've been hesitant to share much about my beliefs on my blog, but it is a central part of who I am. I converted to Catholicism before getting married almost five years ago, and although I am still growing in my knowledge of the Church and the traditions of my faith, my belief in God our Creator has been with me since I was a little girl.

And as part of that faith I believe we were gifted with being stewards of our precious Earth. How amazing is it that we have been given a home that, when we take care of it properly, has the potential to provide for all our physical needs? There is water to quench our thirst, earth to grow our crops, air to breathe, plants to provide us food and medicine. And what a beautifully decorated home it is--shouldn't we try to keep it that way?

No matter your faith or philosophy, I think that we can all acknowledge the need for respecting the home we all share and our interdependence in keeping it clean (many hands make light work, right?). But our choices toward greener living will never be sustainable in our everyday lives if we don't have motivation beyond jumping on the green bandwagon.  So a simple way to think about the choices we make is to just ask ourselves if we are being good stewards of this wonderful gift of the Earth that we've been given.  Don't obsess over whether you're getting everything right, you're not going to be able to. But by making choices through the filter of respecting the gift of life we can all create a more meaningful home.

What motivates you to take better care of our Earth?
