DIY Upcycled Sandwich Board Sign

DIY upcycled sandwich board

I needed a sign for my Alamo Etsy Craft Party last week, so after raiding my husband's woodshop, I came out with a pair of old windows and some hinges that were perfect for the job. Add some chalkboard paint, and presto! You have an instant sandwich sign!

Here's what you'll need to make your own:
  • A pair of windows (preferably the same size)
  • Vinegar and a rag (for cleaning)
  • Fine grit sandpaper
  • Painters tape, chalkboard paint, and a paint brush
  • 2 door hinges, screws, and a drill

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Here are my dirty old windows. We live in an old house and have been working on renovating our windows. These were some (new) old ones my husband had picked up as extras.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Make sure your windows are clean before you do anything. I like the look of the old, peeling paint, but if you wanted to fix yours up (paint them, etc.) I'd start with that too.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

To ensure that your paint sticks to the glass run a fine piece of sandpaper across the surface. It won't look like it's doing much of anything, but trust me. And make sure you clean it off again after this step.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Next, you want to bust out your painter's tape. I love Frog Tape; it always helps me get super-crisp lines.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Section of the area you want to paint. You can paint the entire pane of glass, or leave a transparent border like I did above.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

After you have your tape where you want it, you're ready to paint! (I bought this bucket of Rust-oleum chalkboard paint from Home Depot forever ago, and still have about half left--it really goes a long way!)

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Start with strokes all in one direction (from top to bottom or side to side).

DIY upcycled sandwich board

And make sure you let each layer dry before adding another.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Otherwise you'll start to get little wavy lines where the layer beneath begins moving (like it did here, oops!). Don't stress too much if this happens to you, though. I found that the lines began to disappear as I added each layer (after letting them dry of course!). And make sure you alternate the direction you're painting from layer to layer in order to get a more even look.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

And unless you have something behind your glass pane, you'll need to add enough layers until it's no longer transparent. You can still see my hand after just two layers. I think I ended up adding about 5 or 6 layers total to get the look I wanted. You might need more or less, just check it from time to time to see if you can still see any light shining through.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

When you're done with the paint, let it dry a few more minutes (or more if needed--I was doing this outside during the South Texas summer so it was drying pretty fast). Then, peel off the tape and check out those sweet lines!

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Painting the windows is the most time-consuming part, so you're almost done!

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Next, you want to gather your hinges, screws, and a drill (I have my husband to thank for the power tools).

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Place your windows top to top with your hinges open--and make sure that they're in position to fold closed when you stand your sandwich board up.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Start with one screw on each side of the hinge to get it started.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

(My husband helped me get started, but I insisted on doing the rest of the drilling--mamas can use power tools too--you should probably wear some goggles though--unlike I did!)

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Drill in all your screws...

DIY upcycled sandwich board

...and there you have it! My windows were pretty heavy and sturdy so I'm not worried about them falling open. If yours are lighter (or you're using something other than windows), you may want to add a hinge between them to keep it from opening flat on itself.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Lastly, you want to set the chalkboard paint. I don't really get why, but that's what the directions say (they also say to wait several days between steps but I needed this done ASAP). To set the paint, just take a piece of chalk and run it across the chalkboard, then wipe it off with a damp cloth.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Now you're ready to pretty it up with some fancy writing.

DIY upcycled sandwich board

Or just scribble your chicken scratch like I did! Maybe I need to revisit this post on How to Draw Like an Artist on a Chalkboard

You can use your sign for just about anything from parties, to craft shows, or just a fun way to greet visitors at home. I hope you enjoyed my tutorial, and I'd love to see your DIY sandwich board signs!

Etsy Craft Party San Antonio

Day 68: Built a sandwich board out of old windows for tomorrow's #craftparty, you like? @etsy @steet @penningtonpoint

So the big party has come and gone! We had a great turnout and an awesome time crafting the night away--I'm still excited about it!

Untitled

The party was held at the local 1906 store and gallery. I have some items for sale in their shop, and when Stacy, Lisa, and I decided to join up for the worldwide Etsy MeetUp day, I knew this would be the perfect place!

We had some great door prizes for our guests tonight! #craftparty #alamocrafters

Guests arrived to a table of awesome door prizes (and DIY Duck Tape name tags), including donations from Michaels Craft Stores, and Plaid Crafts.

Thanks to @PlaidCrafts for all the Mod Podge and paint--our guests loved using them! #craftparty #alamocrafters

For our make and take tables, we had Texas trading cards (instead of artist trading cards) and travel journals with TONS of materials to decorate and alter them courtesy of Etsy and Michaels. We also enjoyed using paints, brushes, and an assortment of Mod Podge from Plaid Crafts, as well as paper from Astrobrights, and duck tape from the Duck Tape company (did you know they have mustache duck tape??).

I LOVED the mustache Duck Tape--especially lining the travel journals! @DuckTapeBrand #craftparty #alamocrafters

See? There's that awesome duck tape lining the inside of this crafty lady's travel journal (didn't she do an awesome job lining the mustaches up?)

It's happening! #craftparty #alamocrafters

We had about 25 people come out, including lots of new faces I either hadn't met or only knew online. It was fun making so many new friends!

Loving pomegranate lemonade! Thanks @TheLemonadeCo! #craftparty #alamocrafters

The gluten-free cookies are a hit! Thanks Little Aussie Bakery! @AlTasteNoGluten #craftparty #alamocrafters

To keep our crafters happy, we enjoyed donations from both The Lemonade Company and The Little Aussie Bakery and Cafe. The Lemonade Company's pomegranate lemonade was delish, and Little Aussie's gluten-free cookies were a hit! Both are local companies, and we greatly appreciate their generosity!

Thanks to Justin Parr for letting us use his #FL!GHTgallery space--it was perfect for our #craftwar #craftparty #alamocrafters

Now on to the Craft War! San Antonio artist and curator Justin Parr opened up his FL!GHT Gallery (also housed in 1906) for the teams to use, and it was the perfect space for the main event of the evening.

17 minutes left of the #craftwar! #craftparty #alamocrafters

We had three teams of four (some of whom hadn't met each other before Friday night), and we gave them one hour to create the best San Antonio-themed piece out of recyclables and more materials from our sponsors. It was inspiring to see them get so creative--and take the challenge so seriously!

It was really hard picking a winning team, they all worked so hard! Check out their work:

Craft War pinata explosion!

An exploding piñata with cascerones (confetti eggs), bottlecaps, palletas (Mexican popsicles), and a mustache-covered sombrero all spilling out.

Tower of the Americas Craft War style

The Tower of Americas on top of the Riverwalk (sorry I didn't get the bottom part in the shot!).

The winning #craftwar project! Thanks for the inspiration @tlc and @michaelsstores! #craftparty #alamocrafters

In the end we voted for this little guy. An Astrobright, Duck Tape, and bottlecap-covered burro, made out of an oatmeal canister, egg cartons, and yarn (with a hand-drawn margarita or two thrown in). We thought it was both aesthetically pleasing and really embodied the light-hearted Fiesta spirit of San Antonio. Isn't it amazing? We donated it to 1906, and I think you might be able to see it out front in their shop.

Last night's winning #craftwar team! Awesome job ladies! #craftparty #alamocrafters @vrtx09

And here are the ladies of the winning team (the baby's did the majority of the work, of course)!

Thanks so much for joining us last night Veronica--excited you won our giveaway necklace! #craftparty #alamocrafters @vrtx09

Friend and fellow mama-blogger Veronica of Seven Lovely Things was one of our giveaway winners.

And one last photo booth shot! #craftparty #alamocrafters

And my crafty piece of the evening was the Duck Tape-covered cardboard Alamo for our DIY photo booth.

Stacy and me at the SA #craftparty

It turned out so great and we all had tons of fun! Everyone was asking when the next party will be--I don't know if we can wait until next year! Thanks to everyone who came out--it wouldn't have been a party without y'all.

And special thanks again to our sponsors, Etsy, Michaels Stores, Plaid Crafts, Duck Tape, Astrobrights, and Fiskars for providing all of our crafting supplies for the evening--you really made our night!

Special thanks to Yvette and Andy Benavides for opening their gallery and home for our #craftparty last night! You guys are awesome! @smartsanantonio #alamocrafters

And saving the best for last, thanks again to Yvette and Andy, owners of the 1906 mega-art space of San Antonio, for opening up their home and work space for our party!

Not only do they provide studio and gallery space for local and international artists, but they also run a frame shop, featuring local artisan goods, and run the nonprofit SMART (Supporting Multiple Arts Resources Together) dedicated to raising awareness of the developmental impact of the arts on our great city.

It was so fun working with them and to see their enthusiasm for uniting the art and craft communities of San Antonio--both very big and happening groups!

Thanks again to all who came out, and to Lisa and Stacy who both encouraged and helped me pull this thing together! We'll definitely be getting our craft on again soon!

**Disclosure: I was not paid to put on this event or write this post. I did receive products from Michaels, Plaid Crafts, and Fiskars, as well as food and drink donations from The Lemonade Company and The Little Aussie Bakery and Cafe for the event. The Astrobright and Duck Tape sponsors were arranged by my co-hosts, Lisa and Stacy.**

Untitled

Thank you all for entering my giveaway for tickets to the local Witte Museum! And congrats to Alvina Castro, you're the lucky winner! I'll be sending you an email with more info about your tickets.

In the meantime, I promise to get back on board with my weekly photo posts soon. I'm working like crazy on a couple of projects right now--including this Friday's Alamo City Craft War! The boys start school next week, so hopefully things will start to settle back down around here.

How has your summer been? Any little ones already starting school?

Witte Museum Giveaway

The beautiful new South Texas Heritage Center #sthcwitte #wittemuseum #samoms

Skyler and I were invited for a special tour of the new South Texas Heritage Center at the local Witte Museum as part of a Mommy and Me Blogger meetup this past week, and I thought I'd share a peek around at what we saw. (That's Skyler holding the door above--isn't he turning into a gentleman?--psst, Monday's his birthday!).

For those of you not from San Antonio, the Witte's exhibits focus mainly on natural history and science, and have recently expanded with their new South Texas Center. It also has a science treehouse for kids, making it one of the most family-friendly museums in town.

South Texas Heritage Center at the Witte

The South Texas Heritage Center is housed in a beautiful new building adjoined to the historic Pioneer Hall. The center includes artifacts, interactive displays, live demonstrations (we learned all about natural rope-making and cattle branding--no cows were harmed), and actors dressed up in period costume talking to visitors and doing scheduled performances.

Robert and Drew put on a fun performance as the vaquero and cowboy this morning! #wittemuseum #sthcwitte #samoms

Longhorn

Love this beautiful 1824 sampler--if an eight-year-old can do it so can you! #wittemuseum #sthcwitte

Playing at the Witte

Skyler and I are ready for a fun morning at the @WitteMuseum! #samoms

We also enjoyed lunch and the rest of the museum with some of my favorite local mama bloggers. The museum also generously gave us tickets to share with our readers!

So, one lucky local Maker Mama reader will win a set of four tickets to the Witte and the special Darwin exhibit valid through Labor Day weekend. And 10 more of my bloggy friends are giving them away too--so up your chances even more by entering them all in one place from the Rafflecopter widget below. (To enter to win the tickets from me, be sure to +1 the Maker Mama Facebook box in the widget.)

The giveaway will be open until midnight Monday, August 20th and I'll announce the winner on Tuesday!

What's your favorite local museum?

Family Trip to Tulsa

Fun at the splash pad

My husband's family is from Tulsa, Oklahoma, so often when we have an extended vacation time we make the 12-hour drive to visit. The last time we went was two Christmases ago, so we were excited to go up again. The only thing we weren't expecting was for the temperature to be up to 112 degrees!

We found plenty of ways to keep cool though, and of course one of the first things we did was visit a local splash pad. The first time I ever saw a splash pad was here in Tulsa--I can't believe San Antonio doesn't really have any! (Or do they? Are they just well-hidden?) Tulsa has a lot of beautiful parks--including along the river--and we always enjoy going to them.

Orange leaf

Another frequent activity on our trip was Orange Leaf and other assorted froyo joints. They do have these here at home, but we've never really gotten around to going. The kids loved it though, and I was surprised to see how affordable it really was (and yummy, too, of course).

First salon cut

Eleanor had been begging to get her hair cut lately, so I took her to a kids' salon recommended by my sister in law. Q-Cuts was a cute local business with free arcade games (I loved their vintage pinball machine in the back) and fun seats for the kids to sit in during their trim. It was a fun mommy-daughter date, and Eleanor loved feeling like a princess.

Happy at the lake

The sunset was beautiful on our trip out to the lake today!

Next up was an outing to Ft. Gibson Lake. My brother-in-law's parents had some property out there, and they were generous enough to let us all go out and enjoy their boat (thank you!). We had fun swimming, tubing, and marveling at the beautiful sunset.

Bowling shoes

Another activity on our to-do list with the kids was free summer bowling at Andy B's. We signed up for free games at KidsBowlFree.com and all we had to pay for were the shoes.

Summer grilling

Eating #smores! How are you celebrating summer?

All of our playing certainly gave us a big appetite at the end of each day, and we were certainly well-fed! Burgers, hot dogs, and Amelia's first s'more were a real treat!

Saw this cute little piggy bank at the thrift store today--it was hard putting it back! #thriftstore

Of course I had to get in a little thrifting while we were there. Inspired by my friend Missy over at Honeybee Mama, we made a stop by Quality Thrift. Although I loved the little guy above, I didn't bring him home. I did find a grab bag of knitting needles and accessories for $4, along with some board games, an old toolbox, and some artwork for the girls room!

Downtown Tulsa

The Mayo hotel

Chris and I enjoyed Tulsa's Blue Dome District for a special date night to celebrate our anniversary. We had dinner at the delicious Juniper restaurant, and stayed for the evening at the historic Mayo Hotel.

Birthday #cookies (not handmade)

We also celebrated Amelia's second birthday while we there. I had hoped to make a trip out to the zoo, but with the heat, we kept the party simple and met up at another splash pad park.

Good morning! What are you up to today?

Along with all the sight-seeing and celebrating, lazy mornings were another treat while we were there. As you know, I'm not a morning person, so lounging around reading the paper over breakfast in the mornings (rather than dashing off or quelling the kids' early-morning boredom) was devine.

Leftover Hideaway #pizza yum!

And we couldn't miss a trip with friends to the local Hideaway, home to some of the best pizza ever! It was a perfect family-friendly place for catching up.

Naty diapers

Another thing that made our trip feel like a real vacation? Disposable diapers. We've been cloth diapering for a while now, but on extended trips like this one we do make an exception. I don't compromise on going green though. My all-time favorite disposable is definitely Nature Babycare by Naty.* Their diapers are chlorine-free and primarily made of natural, biodegradable materials which are much healthier for my little one and the environment. (*Amazon affiliate link.)

Oklahoma Aquarium

Untitled

We couldn't go to Tulsa without stopping by the Oklahoma Aquarium, either. The kids love all of the touch tanks and the shark tunnel is always a hit.

Mama Bloggers

And on our last day we managed to meet up with friend and fellow mama blogger Missy (aka Honeybee Mama) for a playdate with the kids (at another splash pad of course!). Missy is an amazing mama and doula who makes her own slings for her Etsy shop--I definitely wish we lived closer! She wrote about our playdate over on the Tulsa Kids blog here.

Good morning! We're on the road back to San Antonio today!

That's our Tulsa trip in a nutshell. We headed back to San Antonio just as the sun was rising--and although it was a long (and stressful) day in the car, it was well worth the trip to see our wonderful family and friends in a great little city. Thanks to my in-laws, Dave and Christi, for welcoming our crazy crew of 6 for the week--we always enjoy our stay!

What have you been up to this summer? Any big trips? Fun staycations? Hope it's been a good one! Now who's ready for back-to-school? Yikes.
