I had the wonderful opportunity last month to attend a book launch party at the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) for their new children's board book series, Arte Kids. There are three books (with more on the way), published in collaboration with local Trinity University Press, and the San Antonio Public Library Foundation. The books feature artwork selected entirely from the museum's collections, making a beautiful tribute to San Antonio and preK bilingual education.
We received a complimentary set of the colorful trio, including 123 Sí!, Colores Everywhere!, and Hello Circulos! The museum and TU Press threw a beautiful party for the launch, complete with yummy cookies inspired by the books, live music, hands-on art projects, and stroller tours.
I brought the girls along for the party and we had a morning full of friends, art, and lots of fun! (That's cookie on Amelia's face.)
In addition to their new kids book series, SAMA has just started a new weekly preK playdate program. And (this is where I get giddy), they invited me to host this month! The first official playdate was last Wednesday, and I had so much fun!
Our theme for the day was Color My World and we started off with storytime in front of our focus art piece, reading Colores Everywhere! and Pantone: Color. I brought one of my favorite handmade blankets from home for the kids to gather on and we had a blast naming all the colors we saw, playing games, and coloring our own little worlds with Made by Joel's paper city set. The kids were also amazed to see some of the art from the book right in front of them!
Are you in San Antonio? I'd love if you'd join us for our next playdate! SAMA playdates are every Wednesday morning from 10-11am. The playdates program is free with museum admission ($10 for adults, kids 12 and under are free), and there's free parking just across the street! The theme for tomorrow's playdate is Shape Up! and we'll be doing some great activities. Check out the full program calendar here.
So are you as in love with SAMA and their new board books as I am? How about winning a set of your own? I thought so! Trinity University Press has generously offered one Maker Mama reader a set of all three Arte Kids books to enjoy at home! I love sitting down with my girls and exploring these books--they go way beyond the simple shapes, numbers, and colors books I so often see, and I love introducing a second language while they're so little.
