We lit the first candle on our Advent wreath last night. We hadn’t really been getting in the “Christmas mood” yet, but when I brought the Advent wreath, our nativity set, and a few other items out we were transformed. The kids were in a flurry and even created a snow party in their room with real (fake) snow–made out of tons of white pieces of yarn (they did clean it up).
At dinner we put the lights down low as the candle was lit, and sang the refrain from O Come, O Come Emmanuel, we were there, in the moment, in waiting, anticipating Jesus.
Afterwards, during our nightly prayer time, we went over the first day of The Truth in the Tinsel‘s Advent activity calendar. We read a Bible passage, and talked about Jesus as the Light of the World. Last year we made a new handmade ornament each day, but this year I’m keeping it simpler. I saved last year’s ornaments, and we’re still putting them on our mini tree, but I also purchased the printable ornaments to go along with each day.
This way the kids each get to decorate their own ornament and it’s a little easier on me. We’ll be hanging them as some sort of garland(s) in the house–I’ll show you when we figure out where!
How does your family observe Advent? Do you have a special Advent calendar? I’d love to hear any fun ideas!
