I took another trip to Goodwill last week and was on the prowl for some craft supplies. When I saw this colorful lampshade a light bulb went off (pun intended). Baskets can be super expensive brand new, and I know we’re all eager to get things all sorted and organized with the new year. So skip the expense on fancy containers, head to your local thrift store and pick up some lampshades for your own one-of-a-kind baskets instead.
Here’s what you’ll need for your basket:
- lampshade
- sturdy fabric for the bottom–I used some old suede pants, you could even buy some old jeans while you’re thrifting
- fabric pen
- scissors
- embroidery thread
- heavy-duty needle
The hands-on part of this project is pretty simple. Trace a circle about 1/2″ larger than your shade, cut it out, and then whipstitch around the edge, pulling it taught as you go. It may be difficult to get the fabric completely flat, but taping it in place before you sew can help.
And there you have it, your own upcycled lampshade basket. This would be perfect for storing kids toys, office supplies, crafty goodies, or just about anything else you’d put in a basket!
Happy making everyone! I have a few more thriftstore how-tos up my sleeve for you this month–you don’t want to miss them!
Disclosure: I received a gift card from Goodwill San Antonio to shop for supplies. I received no monetary compensation for this post.
