Keyboard Pencil Jar

This post is sponsored by Goodwill SA, who not only generously supported our Etsy craft party with all the keyboards we could ask for, but also supports the greater San Antonio community by changing lives through the power of work.

Last week we held our Etsy craft party at Geekdom, a local collaborative workspace for tech start ups. To keep in tune with the venue, I came up with a bunch of tech-themed crafts, including this keyboard pencil jar.

For this project you’ll need a keyboard and a small glass cup–both things you can easily find at your local thrift store.

Flip your keyboard over and take out all the screws with a screwdriver.

When you open it up, you’ll find a silicone sheet under the keys (that’s what makes them pop back up when you press them) and a set of flexible circuit boards. You may have to take out a few more screws to get both sheets out, but it’s pretty straight forward.

Separate your flexible circuit sheets and have at it. Trim them to size and use some superglue or clear packing tape to attach them to your glass.

This black silicone was underneath the keyboard of an ancient laptop I took apart–I love the contrast.

A keyboard pencil jar would make a perfect gift for any tech lover’s desk. I bet it would look pretty with a little votive in it, too. And save those keyboard keys for more techie crafts.
