DIY Kids Sewing Box

We just celebrated our oldest daughter’s 6th birthday, and the one thing she asked me to make her was a sewing kit. It just makes this mama swoon when I hear that my kids love to get crafty. Read on to find out how I made our own DIY Kids Sewing Box.

I found the cardboard suitcase for about $10 at Target in the kid’s decor section. For the bottom, I cut out some white cardboard to make dividers. I didn’t glue them in place, just cut them so they’d fit snugly.

The original inspiration for this sewing box came from this little sewing kit via Apartment Therapy. I loved the idea of everything having its own elastic to fit in.  To recreate that I picked out some teal scrap fabric and stitched on some narrow elastic for each item. Lining everything up before hand helps. Then I wrapped the fabric around some thin cardboard and hot glued it to the suitcase.
It’s a cute and simple gift idea–the hardest part was picking out everything to go in it! Here’s what I included in ours:
Knitting Doll
Stork Embroidery Scissors
Tape Measure
Embroidery Thread
Thimble
Sewing Thread
Yarn
Felt Needlebook (handmade)
Embroidery Hoop
Pincushion Gal (click to learn more about how I made her!)
I’m happy to say Eleanor loves her sewing box! (The yarn and scissors have already been put to good use!)
