Earlier this month Chris and I had the opportunity to take the kids on a tour of the newly remodeled Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Not only did we get a peek behind the scenes of the beautiful HEB Performance Hall and the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater, but we also met the cast of the upcoming Fantastic Mr. Fox, the inaugural performance of the new OPERA San Antonio.
I remember field trips to the theatre as a girl (seeing Peter Pan fly across the stage was pure magic), and we love taking our own kids, too. Experiencing live theatre and music fills you with a sense of joy and wonder that the movie theatre just can’t compete with. Although taking kids to the opera may sound intimidating, (getting fancied up, sitting still, and being able to follow along), OPERA San Antonio wins in my book by opening with such a family-friendly production.
The set and costumes are designed by British visual artist Emily Carew Woodard.
Cast members John Brancy (Mr. Fox), Theo Lebow (Mr. Porcupine), and Johnathan Blalock (Mole)
The cast was generous enough to take time out of their rehearsal schedule and meet us on the River Walk Plaza, where this Saturday’s performance will be simulcast on a 32-by-18-foot video screen. The kids loved having their books signed by the cast, and the cast was just as thrilled to meet us. We left excited to see the show and can’t wait for one of you to join us, too!
