I’m always looking for new ways to recycle common thrift store items, and t-shirts are one of the easiest materials to work with. We use linens every night at dinner, but our current ones are getting a little sad-looking. So recycled t-shirt placemats it is! I love the shibori trend online right now, so I decided to give them a little color using a Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit.
Materials:
- Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit
- White t-shirt
Cut a 18×12 inch rectangle from both layers of your t-shirt and stitch along all the edges. 
Fold your placemat in half lengthwise.
Pinch evenly across one edge of the fabric and secure with rubber bands (included in your kit).
Then pinch and secure across the opposite edge.
Add an additional rubber band at each point you gathered.
Then use one last rubber band across the middle.
Add water to your tie-dye bottle (I chose turquoise) and pick an easy to clean spot to use your tie-dye.
Using the gloves in your kit, squeeze the tie-dye on your fabric.
Don’t soak it all though, or you won’t get any contrast in the end.
Cover your fabric in plastic wrap and let sit 4-6 hours. When you’re ready, rinse placemat until it runs clear, then wash separately and dry.
I love how my placemat turned out, and this is a great way to add some color to your summer table.
I also tried my hand at a triangle-fold technique with the fuchsia tie-dye in my kit. The triangles didn’t make it all across the placemat, but I love the contrast of color! Have you tried any recent tie-dye projects? What would you love to make?
