He's away at basic training and I'm eagerly awaiting his Sunday call home. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ In the meantime, I'll take this time to gush on how incredibly proud I am of Skyler. He's a bright light to everyone around him and I miss him to pieces—laughing with him is the best medicine in the world. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I was a wee babe at 19 myself when I became his mother, and it's been an incredible journey ever since. Happy birthday, bud, love you and can't wait to see you. ✨
Life is feeling pretty stressful down here in Texa Life is feeling pretty stressful down here in Texas with back to school season and 1 kiddo too young to get vaccinated y'all. Oh, and our governor dissolved funding for virtual learning and doesn't want to allow local schools and cities to mandate masks. There are currently only 320 ICU beds available in the ENTIRE state with a population of over 29 million people. ⁠ ⁠ Two days ago in Dallas, they were 100% out of pediatric ICU beds, and the county judge there said "That means if your child's in a car wreck, if your child has a congenital heart defect or something and needs an ICU bed, or more likely if they have COVID and need an ICU bed, we don't have one. Your child will wait for another child to die." ⁠I fear this will be San Antonio soon.⁠ ⁠ There are parents from my kids' school sitting on their high horses stating publicly that they will not be forced to send their kids to school in masks. @greatheartsmontevista I sincerely hope you will make every effort to ensure the safety of our kids this year—so far I don't have that assurance as you waffle on your mask policy. ⁠ ⁠ What happens when the schools shutdown because people aren't taking "personal responsibility" as our governor so often likes to say? What happens when your kid is the one waiting for another child to die so they have a hospital bed? ⁠ ⁠ There were 9,000 new cases in a 7-day period in Bexar county (where I live) since Aug 7. There are only 8% of ICU beds available here. Last week the city ran out of ambulances for 26 minutes. What is so god&*n hard about wearing a mask? ⁠ ⁠ I'm not the only furious mama bear out here right now. I'm grateful that San Antonio Mayor @ron_nirenberg is advocating for the health and safety of our city. This doesn't have to be a political thing, but I'm grateful we have politicians who take science into account. Lord help us.
Today is #bookloversday and I'm throwing it back t Today is #bookloversday and I'm throwing it back to visiting Beverly Cleary's childhood home in Portland. I was too shy to take a picture of her old house as we drove by, but I did snag a book from the little free library across the street as a memento. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ There's a park nearby with statues commemorating her most memorable characters—Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ribsy. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I did stop to take a picture of the street sign on the famed Klickitat street (fun fact: that's not actually the street she lived on). ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I wish I could say that I fell in love with the Ramona series during my own childhood. I was familiar with it, but didn't fully immerse myself in it until I began road tripping with my kids. I was a huge Ralph S. Mouse fan, however.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I downloaded the longest family-friendly audiobook I could with my Audible credit years ago, and it was the nearly 19-hour Ramona Quimby audio collection. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ It was one of the best small investments I've ever made for my kids.
